Canvassing Questions and Answers
What is the 1,000 Doors Challenge?
Is a Harm Reduction MKE community engagement strategy to protome harm reduction vending machines across Milwaukee County. Together, Milwaukee County harm reduction specialists, experts and people with lived experience reach residents to educate on and distribute harm reduction supplies.
Does each agency have to reach 1,000 doors by itself?
NO! Each agency will be given 50 of each harm reduction supply to reach 50 doors. When all agencies participate, we'll reach 1,000 Doors together.
Where should we canvass?
Each agency is encouraged to canvass within a 10-block radius of harm reduction vending machines. Individuals and organizations that don't have a vending machine can partner with the one nearest their location.
Who are we trying to reach and what do we say?
1. Knock on residential and business doors.
2. Tell them where the nearest vending machine is located.
3. Give them one of each harm reduction supply (Narcan, gun locks, drug testing strips, medication deactivation bags and lock bags)
4. Show them demonstration videos if they want and on-site training.
5. Invite them to the resources fair from 2pm to 5pm at Washington Park Senior Center
What supplies do we need? Where do we get them from?
To canvass successfully, your team needs:
1. 50 of each harm reduction supply. Complete the "Registration Form" and be sure to indicate which date you'll pick up your supplies.
2. One t-shirt for each person on your team. Complete the "T-shirt Pick Up Form" to indicate when you'll pick up your shirts.
3. The Canvassing Check List so that you can upload your photos.
When does canvassing start and how long will it take?
You should decide how long you’ll canvass between 9am and 1pm, keeping in mind that you want to leave harm-reduction items in 50 homes. You can give supplies to people walking down the street and you can give each home more than one of the supplies.
Where should I send pictures of my team canvassing?
There will be a QR code provided that will allow you to upload your pictures to the shared folder.
What should we tell people? Is there a script?
There’s a script you should reference while talking to people. It has questions you need to ask. Enter the answers to your questions in the 1000 Doors Challenge Canvassing Questionnaire.
