How to Get Copies of Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce and Domestic Partnership Records

The Register of Deeds Office will be closed Thursday & Friday, November 25 & 26, 2021

 

Vital Records - In Person Service 8 a.m. - 4 p.m., Monday through Friday (No appointment necessary) 

The ROD Office will continue to process Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce (2016 to present) and Domestic Partnership/Terminations by mail, internet orders, fax at (414) 223-1942, dropbox at CH-103 or in person. Questions regarding vital records (414) 278-4027.
After the ceremony, marriage licenses can be mailed to: Register of Deeds, 901 N. 9th Street, Room 103, Milwaukee WI 53233; emailed to: RODVitalRecords@milwaukeecountywi.gov or faxed to (414) 223-1942. Questions regarding submission of the marriage license (414) 278-4027.
Judges or other county employees can send them via inter-office mail or deposit them in the ROD dropbox at CH-103.

Real Estate Research - By Appointment

The ROD Office will continue to research and copy requests by mail, email, dropbox at CH-G6 or by appointment. Questions regarding real estate research and document copies (414) 278-4001.

Real Estate Recording - By Appointment

The ROD Office will continue to process real estate documents via eRecordings, mail, dropbox at CH-103 or by appointment. Questions regarding recording documents (414) 278-4005.

How Do I Get Certified Copies of Vital Records?

Record Fees: $20 for first copy +$3 for each additional copy.
There is a $3 service fee for in-person orders.

By Mail

Complete and print an application. Include the application with your inquiry, along with a copy of your valid picture ID and form of payment.

Statewide Certificate Issuance

Milwaukee County can issue the following Wisconsin certificates:

  • Birth certificates - from Oct. 1, 1907
  • Death certificates - from Sept. 1, 2013
  • Marriage certificates - All records available in our office
  • Divorce certificates - from Jan. 1, 2016 (Prior to Jan. 1, 2016 contact Clerk of Courts)

Domestic partnership certificates or termination records are only available in the county in which the event took place.

To apply for your marriage license prior to getting married, contact the County Clerk


Genealogy

We have birth records from the 1850s to present, death records from 1872 to present, and marriage records from the 1830s to present.

All in-person research appointments at the Milwaukee County Register of Deeds - Vital Records office are suspended until further notice.
