Real Estate Documents

The ROD Office will continue to process real estate documents via eRecordings and mail.

Vital Records

The ROD Office will continue to process Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce and Domestic Partnership/Terminations by mail, email, internet orders or fax at (414) 223-1942.

Real Estate Research

The ROD Office will continue to research and copy requests by mail or email.

How Do I Get Certified Copies of Vital Records?

Do you need a copy of a birth certificate, marriage certificate or divorce certificate? You can obtain certified copies of the following vital records from any Register of Deeds office in the State of Wisconsin where the event occurred in Wisconsin. For dates outside of the following, you have to obtain the record from the county in which the event took place.

Birth certificates - from Oct. 1, 1907

Death certificates - from Sept. 1, 2013

Marriage certificates - All records available in our office

Divorce certificates - from Jan. 1, 2016 (Prior to January 1, 2016 contact Clerk of Courts)

Domestic partnership certificates or terminations - Records only available in the County in which the event took place.

To apply for your marriage license prior to getting married, contact the County Clerk.

Certified copies of vital records are currently unavailable in person due the public health crisis.  Each record is $20 each for the first copy and $3 each for additional copies of the same record purchased at the same time. We accept check, cash, credit or debit.  There is a fee of $2.50 or 3% (whichever is greater) for credit & debit card payments.

During the public health crisis you may submit your vital records requests by mail, email, fax or online through VitalChek.
All requests will require proof of identification.  Orders, other than mail, will need to be paid for by credit or debit.

Identification Is Required

Certified copies of vital records are available by mail from the Register of Deeds office, 901 N. 9th Street, Courthouse Room 103, Milwaukee, WI, 53233-1458. $20 each for the first copy and $3 each for additional copies of the same record purchased at the same time. Please include a cashiers check, money order or personal check.

Identification Is Required

Certified copies of vital records are available online. $20 each for the first copy and $3 each for additional copies of the same record purchased at the same time. Additional fees are charged by VitalChek. All major credit cards are accepted.

Genealogy

We have birth records from the 1850s to present, death records from 1872 to present, and marriage records from the 1830s to present.

  • Genealogical research hours are 8 a.m. to noon or noon to 4 p.m, Monday through Friday
  • Researchers must make an appointment at least 24 hours in advance
  • We accept up to six appointments per day - three in the morning and three in the afternoon
  • We recommend scheduling appointments two to three weeks in advance
  • All researchers must be at least 12 years of age and produce a valid ID. Minors performing genealogy must be accompanied by an adult
  • Customers are charged $7 for each record that is obtained for viewing
  • Customers are charged $20 for a copy of the record (whether certified or non-certified)
  • Cash, credit and debit cards are accepted for genealogical requests
