What Is the Milwaukee County Youth Commission?
In 2022, County Executive David Crowley and Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson-Bovell co-authored a resolution to re-establish the Milwaukee County Youth Commission.
The commission consists of 20 members, age 14 to 18, who reside in Milwaukee County and attend high school. The commission exists to:
- Serve and advance the interests of Milwaukee County youth
- Make advisory recommendations about policy and budgetary decisions to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors
- Advance Milwaukee County’s mission of achieving racial equity
The commission meets monthly, except for August. One member represents each of the 18 supervisory districts and two serve as co-chairs. Commissioners are appointed to one- or two-year terms.
What Are the Benefits of Serving on the Milwaukee County Youth Commission?
The Milwaukee County Youth Commission provides young people in Milwaukee County with a unique experience in community service, civic engagement, and policy and budget decision-making.
Youth Commissioners receive $12.50 per hour for active participation in Youth Commission meetings and activities. In addition, commissioners receive technology support to participate in remote meetings as well as a meal for in-person meetings, which generally take place on the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., except during the August recess. The Youth Commission also has direct access to a group of five adult advisors, one of whom is appointed by the Youth Commission.
