Amplifying Youth Voices
In 2022, County Executive David Crowley and Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson co-authored a resolution to re-establish the Milwaukee County Youth Commission.
The commission consists of 20 members, age 14 to 18, who reside in Milwaukee County and attend high school. The commission exists to:
The commission meets monthly, except for August. One member represents each of the 18 supervisory districts and two serve as co-chairs. Commissioners are appointed to one or two-year terms.
The Milwaukee County Youth Commission provides young people in Milwaukee County with a unique experience in community service, civic engagement, and policy and budget decision-making.
Youth commissioners receive $12.50 per hour for active participation in Youth Commission meetings and activities. In addition, commissioners receive technology support to participate in remote meetings as well as transportation and a meal for in-person meetings, which generally take place on the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. except during the August recess. The Youth Commission has direct access to a group of five adult advisors, one of which is appointed by the Youth Commission.
The following districts are open for the 2025-26 term: 6, 14, and 16. The deadline to apply is June 30, 2025.

Eligible youth must be age 14 to 18 (as of Sep. 1 of the first year of their term), actively enrolled in high school, and live in Milwaukee County.

2025 Youth Commission Brochure
The Milwaukee County Youth Commission will recognize three organizations in October of 2025 for outstanding work in each of their priority areas of Youth Homelessness, Youth Mental Wellbeing, and Youth Civic Engagement. Note: There is no monetary award associated with this recognition.
Non-profit organizations or high school-based student organizations located in Milwaukee County that directly serve or benefit youth ages 14-18. Individuals or for-profit, religious, partisan, and political (C4) organizations are NOT ELIGIBLE.
The award criteria include 1) accomplishments and impact; 2) racial equity and/or racial justice focus; and 3) unique role of organization in achieving progress in this priority area. Each section has up to 10 points possible for a total of 30 possible points.
Applications will be scored by the members of the Committee on Governance, Finance, & Evaluation along with the following partners for each priority area:

Youth Commission Adopted Bylaws
Beginning in 2024, the Milwaukee County Youth Commission and the Department of Human Resources co-sponsor an annual "Take a Child to Work Day" celebration to expose children who are related to Milwaukee County employees to careers in local government service.
Beginning in 2025, the Milwaukee County Youth Commission plan an annual "Day of Advocacy" to increase awareness and facilitate positive change on policy issues that directly affect the lives of young people in Milwaukee County.
