In 2019, Milwaukee County declared racism a public health crisis and resolved to "create an inclusive organization identifying specific activities to increase diversity across its workforce and in leadership positions.” That July, the director of Facilities Management (FMD) convened a taskforce of seven FMD employees to increase diversity and inclusion in FMD. The taskforce presented its report to the Department of Administrative Services and Human Resources in December 2019.
In developing the report, the taskforce interviewed county and community leaders to learn of their initiatives, successes, struggles and recommendations related to diversity and inclusion. These interviews took place from August to September 2019 and were key to the taskforce developing its goals and actions for the report. The document was further developed through research, training, brainstorming and open discussions.
The report is intended to provide county leaders with a framework for diversity and inclusion, while allowing flexibility to adapt, develop and grow. It is an important step toward improving diversity and inclusion in FMD’s workforce.
