Community Advisory Board

About the Board

The Sheriff’s Community Advisory Board will be comprised of a group of fifteen (15) citizens selected in the following manner:

  • Nine (9) members will be selected by Sheriff Ball based on applications and will consider factors such as, but not limited to, diverse backgrounds, community involvement and relevant expertise

  • The remaining six (6) members will be appointed by the Sheriff

The board will meet monthly with Sheriff Ball to promote transparency and accountability for the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

The board’s primary goal is to provide a forum that allows the community to identify challenges, needs, concerns, and to foster a partnership with the public and the Sheriff’s Office.

All applications must be submitted by Monday, April 14, 2025.

Board Responsibilities:

  • Inform the Sheriff of community issues or concerns

  • Offer ideas and suggestions to address and resolve community concerns

  • Advise the Sheriff on how to improve community trust between law enforcement and the community

  • Willing to share blind spots that are evident to the community but not necessarily specific to law enforcement

  • Inform the community of important initiatives and share feedback with the Sheriff

  • Attend monthly meetings of the board

  • Maintain confidentiality of all meetings and information acquired as a board member

Board Member Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age and reside in Milwaukee County

  • Ability to listen and engage positively with people from different cultures, political ideologies,socio-economic backgrounds, and varying opinions

  • Demonstrated ability to think independently and work collaboratively

  • Open-minded, inquisitive, accepting, responsive, and willing to work with others

  • Ability to think critically and ask and answer questions

  • Ability to understand issues from different perspectives

  • Ability to understand and process information (print, online, and orally) effectively and efficiently

  • Upon appointment, must attend the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office Citizen’s Academy to learn and understand the operational responsibilities of MCSO.

  1. What is the Sheriff's Community Advisory Board?

The Sheriff’s Community Advisory Board serves as a link between the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the diverse community it serves. The board helps to promote transparency, two-way communication, and community engagement. This initiative aims to strengthen trust, build positive relationships and foster a safer and more informed community environment. 

  2. Who can join the Sheriff's Community Advisory Board?

Any Milwaukee County resident who is interested and meets eligibility requirements set forth in the application. 

  3. How many members will be on the board and how are members selected?

There will be fifteen (15) members. Sheriff Ball will select nine (9) members based on applications and will consider factors such as, but not limited to diverse backgrounds, community involvement and relevant expertise. The remaining six (6) members will be appointed by the Sheriff.

  4. How long are the terms?

Board members will serve two (2) year terms. 

  5. How often will the board meet?

On a regular basis, initially one (1) day per month. Meetings will typically last Two (2) to three (3) hours. There may be additional time commitments outside of the meetings.

  6. What power does the board have to make and enforce changes within the MCSO?

While the board can make recommendations, the scope of the authority of the board will be advisory only. Sheriff Ball ultimately decides on actions to take. 

  7. How can I track the board's progress?

The Sheriff will publish board meeting minutes and summaries of board discussions on the MCSO website.
