Language Access Technical Assistance

Milwaukee County is dedicated to offering culturally and linguistically appropriate services to residents with limited English proficiency and those who use alternative communication formats. The Milwaukee County Office of Equity (OOE) guides, coordinates, and monitors the implementation of the County’s language access policy across all County operations. OOE also works with community members to help make sure that the experiences, cultural backgrounds, and languages of County residents are used to shape language access strategies and materials.

Why Language Access Matters in Milwaukee County

Milwaukee County has a diverse population, with over 22 percent (approximately 180,000 residents) classified as Limited-English-Proficient (LEP), speaking more than 90 languages such as Spanish, Hmong, Burmese, Rohingya, Somali, and Arabic. Language barriers hinder access to essential County services, legal rights, and community engagement. Through the County’s language access equity policy, it supports all departments in their efforts to increase access to information, services, and opportunities that improve the quality of life for all residents.

Language Access Support

To support language access, the Office of Equity …

  • Creates and updates procedures and tools for translation, interpretation, and communication access across the County.
  •  Works with community members to identify language needs and challenges.
  • Offers support, training, and resources to staff in different departments.
  • Keeps a list of companies and community groups that offer translation services, both spoken and written.
