ICYMI: County Executive David Crowley, Local Leaders Celebrate New Affordable Housing Development in Whitefish Bay

Crowley’s administration delivered over $3 million to make this affordable housing development a reality

WHITEFISH BAY – Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley joined local leaders and stakeholders to celebrate the opening of The Hampton, an affordable housing community in Whitefish Bay. The ceremony marked the completion of construction and honors the collaborative effort driving the expansion of quality, affordable housing in Milwaukee County. County Executive Crowley was joined by Milwaukee County Board Supervisor Anne O’Connor, the Whitefish Bay Board of Trustees, the development team, project partners, County officials, and residents.

“From Greenfield and Brown Deer, to South Milwaukee and Wauwatosa, Milwaukee County continues supporting affordable housing developments in suburban communities that have never seen investments like this before,” said County Executive Crowley. “My administration delivered over $3 million for this new residential development in Whitefish Bay that will provide brand new housing options for working families at a price they can afford. I’m proud we worked with the community and advocated in public forums to make this new affordable housing development a reality and do our part to battle the housing affordability crisis in Wisconsin.”

“The Hampton is a beautiful development providing much needed affordable units to residents of Whitefish Bay,” said Supervisor O’Connor. “I’m hopeful it will serve as inspiration for other important projects on the suburban North Shore and throughout Milwaukee County.”

The Hampton is a mixed-use, 17-unit affordable housing development designed to provide high-quality affordable homes. This project was funded by both private and public entities. This includes more than $3 million in federal funding that was allocated by County Executive Crowley and the Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to make the development a reality. The development was also funded through Vacancy to Vitality and Infrastructure access loans from the Wisconsin Housing & Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), a loan from Horicon Bank, and investor equity.

“We are thrilled to have officially opened The Hampton. County Executive David Crowley’s Economic Mobility to the Suburbs funding has lifted many boats. 17 new families will move to Whitefish Bay and enjoy affordable living in brand new apartments,” said Brian Spoerl, Founder and Managing Partner, Spoerl Commercial, LLC. “The success of Executive Crowley’s Economic Mobility efforts inspired Spoerl Commercial to bring projects similar to the Hampton to other communities in Milwaukee County and Wisconsin. Spoerl Commercial is proposing 19 affordable units in Shorewood and will be starting 59 units in Sturgeon Bay. We look forward to having a greater impact on our community together.”

At County Executive Crowley’s direction, DHHS has funded the largest number of affordable housing projects in Milwaukee County history. Since taking office, Crowley’s administration has delivered nearly $50 million in funding for affordable housing projects across the community, particularly in Milwaukee County suburbs where racial disparities in housing access and homeownership opportunities continue preventing many residents from living in the neighborhood of their choice.

“This investment in affordable housing in Whitefish Bay advances our vision of creating healthy communities by addressing a key social driver of health, housing, which also helps residents achieve better health, education, and economic outcomes, particularly at a time when Milwaukee County residents face significant challenges related to housing access and affordability,” said James Mathy, Housing Services Administrator, DHHS. “By investing in housing, we are investing in community health.”
