Milwaukee County’s Welding Program is a collaborative initiative with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) and Employ Milwaukee. This program offers residents the opportunity to earn industry-recognized welding certifications, college credits, and practical skills for higher paying jobs.
The CRC has a state-of-the-art welding classroom equipped with modern welding booths. Participants earn six college credits. The training builds discipline and a strong work ethic.
How this benefits individuals and creates healthier communities:
Research shows that educational programs like our welding class reduce recidivism.
A 2018 RAND Corporation study found that residents who participate in educational programs while incarcerated are 48% less likely to return to prison within three years compared to those who do not engage in such programs.
While individuals in our custody are here for less time, these skills and certification address one of the primary factors contributing to recidivism: unemployment.
