Chantell Jewell is a highly experienced and values-driven professional who has dedicated over 30 years of her career to serving the community. With a wealth of knowledge gained from working in the Department of Corrections, Chantell has a unique perspective that includes community-focused work at Employ Milwaukee, as well as experience working with justice-involved youth at the Division of Youth and Family Services.
During her time with the DOC, Chantell served in various roles: Youth Counselor, Probation/Parole Agent, and ultimately a Corrections Field Supervisor for 20 years. Since retiring from the DOC, Chantell has remained committed to serving Milwaukee County, where she calls home. She has served as the Reentry Services Manager at Employ Milwaukee and a Deputy Administrator at Milwaukee County's Division of Youth and Family Services. In both positions, Chantell's commitment to creating change within the criminal justice system and Milwaukee County has been evident.
Chantell's dedication to education is also evident in her academic achievements. She holds an undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a master's degree in Business Administration from Cardinal Stritch University. She is a subject matter expert in multiple areas, including Community Correctional Systems, Juvenile Correctional Systems, and trained Evidence-Based Practices in Corrections. Chantell also shares her knowledge and expertise as an instructor at Marquette University in the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences and as a member of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Helen Bader School of Social Welfare Dean's Advisory Council. Chantell received the Distinguished Alumni Award from UWM in 2024.
In November 2020, Chantell was appointed as the Superintendent of the House of Correction, becoming the first Black woman to lead the Milwaukee County House of Correction after being confirmed by the County Board in December.
Throughout her career, Chantell has positively influenced the lives of justice-involved individuals with her integrated strength-based approach that addresses individual barriers to success. Her vision is to comprehensively address the needs of justice-involved individuals through partnership and collaboration, ultimately leading to safer communities and enhancing quality of life. In 2022, Chantell was named as one of “Wisconsin’s 52 Most Influential Black Leaders" by Madison 365.
