The Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center, formerly known as the House of Correction, is a institution committed to the rehabilitation and reintegration of justice-involved individuals. By the principles outlined in Wisconsin Statutes Chapter 301, the CRC operates as a secure facility for adult men and women. It is Wisconsin's largest county correctional facility. It is the only House of Correction in the state.
The Milwaukee County Community Reintegration Center operates under a military command structure with the Superintendent appointed by the Milwaukee County Executive.
Language matters.
In 2022, our name changed from the House of Correction to Community Reintegration Center (CRC). We also eliminated the term inmate and refer to justice-impacted people here as residents. Typically, we house residents 18 and older.
At the core of CRC programming is a specialized curriculum that facilitates the reintegration process. This includes vocational training, educational programs, and counseling services that recognize the diverse needs of our residents.
We are committed to fostering an environment where justice-involved individuals grow and thrive. Our approach is rooted in the belief that by building upon identified strengths and comprehensively addressing resident needs, we can empower justice-involved individuals to navigate a path towards successful reintegration.
By joining forces with community organizations, advocates, and various stakeholders, we aspire to help people live better, enhance public safety and improve the overall quality of life, thereby creating safer communities for everyone
The CRC is a program-focused, holistically supportive environment that provides the full spectrum of supports and services needed for successful reintegration into society.
The CRC moves beyond the standard punitive nature of corrections and engages with residents to ensure that they access programs they need for success on reentry. Through relationships with community partners including MATC, Marquette, the Milwaukee Bucks, the Benedict Center, Chase Bank, and others, the CRC allows residents the opportunity to come out of incarceration with the skills and supports needed for successful reentry.
As a correctional institution focused on reintegration, the CRC balances security with the needs residents will have on reentry. This creates an environment in which residents can access the education, support and training they need post-release while taking steps to limit recidivism.
Embracing a humanistic approach, we emphasize individual growth, rehabilitation, and community reintegration. The CRC also aims to reshape societal perceptions of justice-involved individuals and promote a more compassionate and inclusive community.
