Dr. Tlomak is the first woman appointed to serve in the role since 1960s
MILWAUKEE, WI – Today, the Milwaukee County Board unanimously voted to approve the appointment of Dr. Wieslawa Tlomak as the next Chief Medical Examiner of Milwaukee County.
Her appointment and approval from the County Board come on the heels of serving as Interim Chief Medical Examiner since October of 2022.
“Our residents are in good hands when qualified leaders at all levels reflect the population they serve. Thank you to the County Board for sharing those values and voting unanimously to approve Dr. Tlomak as the next Chief Medical Examiner of Milwaukee County,” said County Executive David Crowley. “As someone who understands both the challenges of immigrating to a new country and pursuing the passion of improving health through public service, Dr. Tlomak is uniquely qualified to lead the Medical Examiner’s office and aid our organizations in pursuing its stated goals.”
Dr. Tlomak holds a medical degree from the Medical School of Wroclaw in Poland and an educational commission for foreign medical graduates’ certification of medical diploma. She completed her residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center, which included a dedicated year in neuropathology. She completed her fellowship in forensic pathology in the office of the medical investigator at the same school. Dr. Tlomak is board certified in forensic pathology and anatomic pathology.
Prior to her employment in the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office, Dr. Tlomak, was a pediatrician in her native country of Poland. She immigrated to the United States to pursue her career in Pathology.
A Milwaukee County employee since 2006, Dr. Tlomak began her career as an Assistance Medical Examiner. She was promoted to Deputy Chief Medical Examiner in 2010, and late last year was named the interim Chief Medical Examiner.
“Dr. Tlomak’s fresh leadership couldn’t come at a better time as we move forward in partnership with the State of Wisconsin on a brand-new Center for Forensic Science and Protective Medicine. Milwaukee County is moving forward in the right direction when it comes to addressing public safety and public health,” concluded Crowley.
