Vehicle Registration Fee

Starting March 1, 2017, vehicles registered in Milwaukee County now include a new $30 wheel tax collected on behalf of Milwaukee County to fund transportation related projects.”
In October 2016, County Executive Chris Abele proposed a $60 wheel tax as part of his Recommended Budget for 2017. Milwaukee County Supervisors cut the proposed wheel tax in half to $30 and made $13.6 million in additional cuts to the County Executive’s Recommended Budget as a result.
Current state law requires the county to assess the wheel tax at a flat rate of $30. Milwaukee County Supervisors are requesting that the state legislature grant the county the authority in the future to assess the wheel tax based on the age and value of the vehicle.
Supervisors also provided an opportunity for the public to weigh in on County Executive Abele's wheel tax proposal by voting in a non-binding referendum on the $60 wheel tax in the April 2017 election.
