The Real Estate Services Section (RES) administers the leasing, acquisition and disposition of a wide variety of buildings and vacant property owned by Milwaukee County. Real Estate Services is specifically responsible for marketing, negotiating and selling excess County-owned properties. This includes property management and disposition of tax delinquent properties acquired by the Milwaukee County Treasurer through the tax foreclosure process. Real Estate Services established and provides due diligence procedures and standards, which are the sole responsibility of departments to follow prior to executing lease agreements.
Recently, Real Estate Services closed the first phase of the UWM College of Engineering and Applied Sciences land sale worth $13.6 milion. This section successfully brought together the UMW Real Estate Foundation, various Milwaukee County Departments, Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), the City of Wauwatosa and the Federal Economic Development Administration.
Real Estate Services also assisted in the conveyance of approximately 100-acres of land to the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District for the construction of a floodwater management facility that generated in excess of $7 million for Milwaukee County. This was an example of the intergovernmental cooperation needed to control stormwater run-off and protect existing property. In addition, the stormwater control project converted underutilized flood plain land to developable tax generating property and natural areas for habitat protection.
Real Estate Services negotiated the sale of approximately 67-acres of County land comprising old growth forest to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for the development of a Forest Education and Awareness Center. In addition to generating approximately $250,000 for the County, this intergovernmental cooperation resulted in the preservation of an environmentally sensitive habitat that can be used for educational purposes.
Real Estate Services section has also closed or is entertaining offers on $6.2 milion worth of Park East Property. In the last ten years, the Real Estate Services section has closed on $19 million of property transactions returning vacant or underutilized property to productive tax base.
