Milwaukee County Functional Needs Emergency Shelter

Info for Volunteers

In the event that the MCFNES capabilities to assist people with disabilities and functional needs are mobilized to assist at an emergency shelter, volunteer support will crucial to the operation.MCSNES
MCFNES volunteers will contribute to the success of the MCFNES, and provide an exceptional level of care to those who come to the shelter. It is important that MCFNES volunteers train and register with the program prior to an event because:

► The free, one day training will familiarize volunteers with the MCFNES plans, requiring less “just-in-time training” in an actual event.

► Registered volunteers will be invited to expand their training by participating in MCFNES exercises and other courses when they are offered.

► Background checks can be properly performed on volunteers, ensuring the safety and security of everyone at the shelter.

Qualifications to Volunteer

The MCFNES needs volunteers of all types. Volunteers with medical backgrounds or experience working with people with medical and functional needs are very important to the success of the MCFNES.

Those without medical skills are invited to assist with administrative functions and the general operations of the shelter.   Volunteers must be comfortable working with diverse people.

All community volunteers are welcomed and encouraged to attend a training session.

Time Commitment

If you choose to become a registered MCFNES volunteer, you will be asked to fill out a registration form and consent to a background check.  We will also ask you to become a member of our partner group, the Medical Reserve Corps.  The background check will be conducted by the Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), and you will be asked to complete a short MRC training course (less than one day).  These are the only requirements of MCFNES volunteers.

Volunteers who would like to be more actively engaged with the MCFNES will have opportunities to participate in MCFNES exercises, and a variety of MRC training courses and volunteer opportunities with MRC.

If the MCFNES is opened in response to a disaster or emergency, only registered volunteers will be called to respond.

Shifts will be scheduled in 8 hour blocks, to the extent possible. We understand that there may be circumstances which may allow or require some variation from this.

Volunteers will be asked to assist at the shelter only if they can do so without risking their own safety or the safety of their family.

Those who can do, do.
