The Trial Garden was officially started in 1950 where the service building now stands. It was moved to its present location in the mid 1950s. In 1960, the trial garden became an official test site for All America Rose Selections, one of only 23 in the country. A seed exchange program started in 1965, and in 1967, Boerner became a test site for All America Selections flower trials. Thus seed from all over the country are grown here and rated by judges for flower quality, foliage attractiveness, durability, and other characteristics. A recent count showed well over 400 varieties of roses and flowers undergoing trial and accessible for viewing.
