Special Needs

The Milwaukee County Special Needs Housing Division was created to assist individuals who have mental illness in obtaining safe and affordable housing. A series of articles in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2006 and 2007 highlighted the deplorable conditions individuals who had mental illness had been residing in. Our community sprang into action and the Special Needs Housing Division was created in 2008 to provide decent, safe and affordable housing options for these individuals. Since 2008, the Special Needs Housing Division has been part of creating over 500 permanent supportive housing units throughout Milwaukee County. The Special Needs Housing Division also has a supported apartment program and transitional housing programs. Within the next year, Milwaukee County will have the first harm reduction housing program in Wisconsin.
