07-23-10 Milwaukee County Flood Damage Totals

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. reports that Milwaukee County flood damage now exceeds more than $28,500,000. 6368 residential homes in Milwaukee County sustained damage totaling $16,803,850 . 92 businesses sustained damage costing approximately $1,479,000. Local agencies and municipalities reported $10,358,662 in public sector damages and costs. No agricultural damage was reported thus far.

 

Citizens affected by yesterday’s storms should report weather-related damages at 2-1-1. All information obtained is being used to determine a damage assessment for Milwaukee County. 

 

County Executive Scott Walker has declared a major disaster for Milwaukee County. Milwaukee County is seeking state and federal assistance through the State of Wisconsin Division of Emergency Management. The damage assessment will be under review by the state to determine state and federal assistance eligibility. 

 

A breakdown of damage totals by municipality is listed on the attached pages. Note that damage is classified in four categories:

 

Affected – House sustained some water damage (ie: wet carpet)

Minor – Resident sustained more serious damage but still lives in home (ie: damaged hot water heater)

Major – Resident cannot live in home but home may be repaired ( ie: damage to electrical system)

Destroyed – Resident will no longer be able to live in home.

 

These are preliminary totals; the final damage totals will be announced at a later time.
