Nature Nauts: Kids Program at Wehr Nature Center

Must be accompanied by an adult.

You and your preschooler will join others as a naturalist guides you through special topics, crafts and outdoor activities.

Tracks & Scat
Winter means wildlife! Tracks, droppings, homes, and feeding signs are all clues of our wild neighbors. Learn how to decipher wildlife signs and then, weather permitting, go exploring for signs of our winter wildlife. NatureNauts will make their own winter track.

Groundhogs Galore
Learn the origins of Groundhog Day as we dig deep into these cute critters. NatureNauts will make their own craft groundhog that pops out of a hole. Come prepared to go outside for a short walk in search of groundhog burrows.

Maple Magic
Come learn about sap, sugar, and syrup from Wisconsin’s State Tree—the Sugar Maple. Children will hear the story of Maggie the Maple Tree and visit the Sugarbush to meet Maggie and give her a hug. After a short walk, everyone will be enjoy a maple syrup treat.

Super Salamanders
Discover the secrets of our super salamanders. We will read The Salamander Room by Ann Mazer and meet a real live Salamander up close.

Hail a Snail & Hug a Slug
NatureNauts will slide into the slippery world of these misunderstood critters. We will go in search of slugs and snails in the forest, meet them up close, and make a craft snail and slug to take home. No “yucks” allowed!

Chirping Crickets
See, up close, how our evening chirpers create their beautiful music. We will read The Very Quiet Cricket by Eric Carle and then meet and pet a real live cricket.

Dancing Dragonflies
Discover the aerial acrobatics of our colorful friend, the Dragonfly. Be prepared for a short walk as we go in search of dragonflies and make your own dragonfly craft to take home.

Sweet Snakes
Slither over to Wehr and learn why snakes really are sweet. NatureNauts will learn about snake adaptations, make a snake craft, and meet a real live Garter Snake.

Wild Woodpeckers
Woodpeckers are beautiful and hardworking birds. Join us for a walk to see woodpecker handiwork up close. NatureNauts will make a meal fit for a woodpecker, and make a craft woodpecker.

Whoooo’s There (Owls)
Does a Screech Owl really “screech”? All little night owls are invited to swoop down to learn that answer and more about our neighborhood owls. NatureNauts will find it a real hoot as they make a owl craft and go in search of owl homes.

Clever Coyotes
All little pups and their parents are invited to this howling good time. Learn how Coyotes are shy, but an important part of the local environment. NatureNauts will make their own Coyote craft.
