Transit/Paratransit
The Milwaukee County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) provides public transit services through the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS). Direct Management and operation of the transit system, including paratransit services, is provided by Milwaukee Transport Services (MTS), a private non-profit corporation under contract to the County. The corporation uses transit facilities and equipment owned and provided by Milwaukee County.
Paratransit operations include the provision of demand responsive transportation and orientation to transportation services. These services complement the fixed-route services of MCTS and are available to those who are Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Paratransit eligible.
The Director's Office of the MCDOT provides County oversight and conducts various transit related studies. Federal and state transit grants are prepared and administered by the Director's Office as well. Division personnel facilitate the acquisition of capital equipment, and provide design and construction services for capital facilities.
Recent Major Accomplishments
Transit received over $25 million American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants for buses, a new fare box and a voice enunciator system.
Transit, along with the Director's Office, has developed a Bus Rapid Transit concept to utilize the $36.6 million of Interstate Cost Estimate funds made available to transit by congress.
Transit along with the Director's Office has taken over the administration of the regional marketing grant serving transit systems in Milwaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, Washington, and Ozaukee Counties.
Transit Received a National Clean Diesel Grant to replace engines in 20 buses converting them over to clean diesel vehicles.
