There have been countless deaths that have occurred in Milwaukee County through the years that have been investigated by the Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office. During these death investigations we attempt to obtain a positive identification on the deceased individual and find family (next of kin) to notify them of their family member’s death. A positive identification can be made by visually identifying the deceased individual in person or from a photograph taken of the deceased individual after death.  Unique tattoos or unique features on the deceased’s body can also assist in making a positive identification.  More scientific methods of identification include DNA testing and comparing fingerprints or dental records taken prior to their death.     
 
The following cases under “Unidentified Adults” and “Unidentified Infants and Fetuses” are cases through the years where the Medical Examiner’s Office was unable to identify the deceased person or find any of their family members. These cases of unidentified people date back from 1970 to the present. 
 
Using modern internet capabilities the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) started the website called “NamUs” which stands for The National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Coroner/Medical Examiner Offices or law enforcement agencies can enter in information for the unidentified people into the NamUs database and hopefully match them with missing persons that have also been entered into the NamUs database. The following cases listed on this website have all been entered into NamUs and are available to be viewed by the public.
