Sheriff's Drug Enforcement Unit
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Drug Enforcement Unit (DEU), a Unit of the Criminal Investigations Division, is comprised of a number of Detectives who work in a Drug Interdiction mode, designed specifically to stem the flow of illegal drugs into the region of Southeastern Wisconsin by monitoring entry points such as Mitchell International Airport, area Bus and Train depots, the Port of Milwaukee, and by monitoring area parcel services. Additionally, in its role as a leading Drug Unit that has been in constant operation for over 25-years, the DEU provides training and technical assistance to local Police agencies and Civic organizations statewide, providing trainers as requested to educate the public in matters of drug identification, narcotics laws and enforcement efforts, and changing trends.
The Milwaukee HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) is a multi-jurisdictional program designed to target significant DTO's (Drug Trafficking Organizations) in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Milwaukee HIDTA was designated in 1998. Since that time the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office has supported this endeavor by assigning personnel to the various initiatives that make up the Milwaukee HIDTA. The Mission of the Milwaukee HIDTA is to substantially reduce drug related activity through enhanced intelligence processes and coordinated law enforcment, prosecutions and demand reduction efforts. There are four types of HIDTA initiatives: Enforcement, Intelligence & Technical, Support and Management and Coordination. The Milwaukee HIDTA has three law enforcement initiatives that are complimented by a coordinated community out reach effort that includes demand reduction efforts through an initiative called "SAFE & SOUND" which focuses on local youths and designed to improve the quality of life and restore neighborhood control to citizens of Southeastern Wisconsin. There is also an initiative that provides intelligence and technical support to the HIDTA law enforcement initiatives, as well as to local law enforcement agencies. The purpose is to provide intelligence and information sharing among agencies. The Milwaukee HIDTA Program goals are to disrupt the market for illegal drugs by dismantling of disrupting drug trafficking and/ or money laundering organizations: and improve the effciency and effectiveness of HIDTA initiatives.
