December 2006 Bay View Compass Editorial
Dear Bay View Compass Readers,
I'd like to wish you and your families a very Happy Holidays. I'd also like to take this opportunity to let you know of some great winter activities Milwaukee County has available for you in our parks system.
The Milwaukee County Parks System offers toboggan sliding at Whitnall Park with a toboggan run including an iced track. The hours for the slide are: Thursday, 4-8pm; Saturday, 10-8pm; and Sunday 10-5pm. Toboggan rentals are $6.00 an hour with unlimited rides. You are able to sled in many of the county parks including Humboldt which offers great hills especially for sledding. You are also able to ice fish in the lagoons and ponds at Humboldt and other parks throughout the county. However, lakes, ponds, and lagoons are not yet ready safe to go on and the Milwaukee Parks Department will issue a release when they are ready. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources determines fishing regulations. There will also be a free ice fishing clinic for children 15 and under on February 3rd, 2007 at Humboldt and Wilson Parks from 9am-3pm (weather permitting).
A favorite winter activity of many is ice skating. There is free outdoor ice skating downtown at the Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park. The 2005-2006 Season has begun and you may bring your own skates or purchase rentals for $5.00. The rink is located at 920 N. Water St. and is open daily starting at 11:00am and open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. If you prefer staying indoors to ice skate, Wilson Park located at 4001 S. 20th St. and has a large arena for ice skating and playing hockey. Skate rental is $2.00 and skating is $5.50 for ages 15-59, otherwise discounts apply. Cross-Country Skiing is available throughout the winter and you are free to use Whitnall Park at 6751 S. 92nd St. which offers a lot of open space and great scenery.
"Peace on Earth" is on show now through January 1, 2007 at our Milwaukee County Domes. This includes hundreds of poinsettias surrounding decorated Christmas trees. In addition to this exhibit, the Domes will be featuring over 20 free musical performances in the Show Dome by the UW Madison Alumni Band and Elm Grove Handbell Choir to name a few. Call the Domes at 649-9830 for more information.
Again, I wish you all a great Holiday season and a Happy New Year!! If you have any questions or comments, as always, feel free to contact my office at 278-4232.
