The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Bureau-Courts Division, working under the leadership of Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr., and by State of Wisconsin statutory authority, provides sworn, uniformed deputies to attend the Circuit Courts of the State of Wisconsin's First Judicial District. There is forty-seven Circuit Court branches and twenty-seven Court Commissioners. Of these, twelve are Civil Courts, ten Juvenile Courts, five Family Courts, twelve Felony Courts and ten Misdemeanor Courts. To fulfill the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office constitutionally mandated functions, a staff of one Captain, three Sergeants and eighty-one Deputies are assigned to provide a variety of duties. These duties include, Court security, inmate management, and response to police/medical emergencies and calls for service, thereby safeguarding the judicial process. This staff reflects the number of personnel assigned to the Courthouse/Safety Building/Criminal Justice Facility Complex and the Children's Court Center on the Milwaukee County grounds in Wauwatosa.
In 2006, an initiative will be undertaken to reorganize Circuit Court bailiff staffing to achieve greater efficiencies while maintaining and ensuring the current high level of security and safety for every person in all of the Circuit Courts.
