Communications Division

The Communications Division of the Special Operations Bureau is responsible for information retrieval from administrative and 9-1-1 cellular calls and the coordination and record-keeping of assignments of all sworn officers of the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office. Dispatchers are always cognizant of their instrumental role in the safety of the officers and the public.

To accomplish these tasks, Dispatchers use a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system into which they enter calls for service and maintain a record of assignments and available deputies. CAD includes a graphic geofile mapping system to pinpoint incident locations. The deputies are dispatched to assignments via an 800 Mhz trunked radio system transmitting to both portable and mobile radios. In the squads, in addition to the mobile radios, deputies use mobile data computers to connect to the State of WI TIME system for drivers' license information and wanted checks on individuals.

Another major part of the dispatchers' workload is answering the phone calls that come in to the Communications Center on the non-emergency/administrative lines and the landline/wireless 9-1-1 lines. Dispatchers answer more than 1,000 emergency 9-1-1 cell calls each day and that number continues to rise. All radio transmissions and telephone calls are recorded. Dispatchers also coordinate a response to more than 20,000 alarms on county property, i.e. the Courthouse Complex, Institution Grounds, and nine radios sites monitoring fire, intrusion, and panic alarms.
