Welcome to the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory. We hope that the following accessibility guide will make your visit a more pleasant one.
Audio Listening Devices:
Six audio boxes are stationed throughout the domes to offer six different 30-second summaries about a major topic that reflects what a sighted person is experiencing as well as enhancing sighted person’s experience.
Braille signage is found on the top of the audio boxes, offering directions on how to use the audio devices. Braille is also located on the restroom signs.
There is one set of automated doors at the entrance to the Conservatory as well as one set to enter each individual dome.
Accessible water fountains are stationed in the front area of the complex.
Educational Classes and Education Center:
Individuals needing accommodation should contact the educator in order to make a request for accommodations for a future visit date. Educator will then contact the Office for Persons with Disabilities.
Each floor has a signed designated area of rescue assistance. People unable to use stairways to evacuate the building are to wait in these areas to be escorted out of the building by safety personnel.
The wheelchair accessible entrance to the Conservatory facility is on the west side of the complex facing Layton Boulevard (27th Street).
All exhibits (including plant collection) are ADA accessible.
There are no food services; only one drink and one ice cream vending machine. Both are at accessible heights.
General off-street parking in the parking lot is available with well-marked accessible parking spaces and ramped curb areas.
Pathways inside each Dome:
The tropical dome and desert dome have paved pathways. However, the grade can be challenging for persons using manual wheelchairs and walkers. The show dome is bricks with a challenging grade as well for persons using manual wheelchairs and walkers.
There are picnic tables in the outdoor plaza that offer accessibility.
Accessible restrooms are located at the front of the complex.
Pets are not allowed in the Conservatory. Service animals that assist individuals with disabilities and comply with the Milwaukee County ADA Service Animal Procedure are welcome in the Conservatory.
Sign Language Interpreters:
Individuals needing a sign language interpreter should contact the educator in order to request an interpreter for a future visit date. Sign language interpreter requests will be directed to the Office for Persons with Disabilities Sign Language Interpreter webpage.
All signage are at accessible heights.
MCTS bus routes on Layton Boulevard (27th Street) are 1/2 blocks west of the Conservatory complex. http://www.ridemcts.com
A limited number of complimentary wheelchairs are maintained by the Conservatory for use while at the Conservatory. A photo ID is required as a deposit. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own mobility devices, as the number of complimentary wheelchairs is limited and are loaned out on a first come first served basis.

Wheelchairs, Mobility Aids, and Other Power Driven Mobility Devices that comply with the Milwaukee County ADA Wheelchairs, Mobility Aids, and Other Power Driven Mobility Devices Procedure are welcome in the Conservatory.
Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory offeres FREE WiFi in the lobby area of the facility. WiFi will automatically pop up as “Milwaukee County Guest.”
